Let’s Talk Baby Food: Why I Started Making My Own (And Why It’s Not as Scary as It Sounds)

First things firstno matter how you feed your baby, you are doing an amazing job. Whether it’s breastmilk, formula, store-bought baby food, homemade mush, or a little of everything… you’re nourishing your baby with love, and that’s what matters most. Feeding a tiny human is no small task, and if you’ve made it through a single meal without wearing half of it on your shirt, you deserve a standing ovation. 👏

That said, I want to share a little bit about my journey into making baby food at homenot because I think everyone should, but because I was shocked by how doable (and honestly kinda fun?) it actually is. Plus, my baby started eating so much of my puree's that her nose actually turned orange from all the sweet potatoes and carrots. Did you know that was a thing? I sure didn't! But hey, she was eating her veggies and it’s the little wins, right?

Why I Gave Homemade Baby Food a Try

Let’s be real. When I first thought about making baby food, I pictured a Pinterest mom with 40 tiny glass jars of rainbow-colored purées labeled in calligraphy. Meanwhile, I’m just trying to remember the last time I washed my hair. 🫠

But then I got curious. I realized that:

  • I wanted to know exactly what was going into my baby’s food.

  • It could actually save us money (hello, grocery budget!).

  • I already had half the ingredients in my fridge.

  • With the right tools, it wasn’t much harder than making my own smoothie.

And then? I was hooked. And not in a crunchy, holier-than-thou way—more in a “this was surprisingly easy and I need to tell someone!” kind of way. So, here I am.

My Favorite Mom Hack: The BEABA Babycook

Enter: my new kitchen BFF—

the BEABA Babycook Solo and its slightly fancier cousin, the BEABA Babycook Neo

These gadgets are like the Instant Pot of baby food. Seriously. They steam, blend, reheat, and defrost all in one little countertop unit. I used mine during nap time (when I should probably be napping too, but hey) and whipped up a week’s worth of baby food in under 30 minutes.

How it works (in 3 steps or less, because that’s all I can handle):

  1. Chop your fruit/veggie/protein (think: sweet potatoes, apples, spinach, chicken).

  2. Add water to the tank, toss the food in the steam basket, and press the steam button.

  3. When it beeps, dump it into the blending bowl and purée to your baby’s desired consistency. Done!

You can get as basic or fancy as you want. There’s even a BEABA Baby Food Cookbook full of fun ideas if you’re in a food rut or your baby is side-eyeing their peas again.

Why I Love Making Baby Food (Besides Feeling Like Supermom)

  • Control: I know exactly what’s in it—no added sugars, preservatives, or mystery flavors.

  • Freshness: The food is made with real, whole ingredients.

  • Cost-effective: Buying fresh produce in bulk and using it for the whole fam? Yes please.

  • Less waste: No more half-used jars lost in the diaper bag abyss.

  • Easy storage: I pop scoops into these adorable BEABA Glass Storage Jars and keep them in the fridge or freezer for later.

Final Thoughts (From One Tired Mama to Another)

This isn’t about being perfect or doing everything “right.” It’s about finding what works for you and your baby. Some weeks, I crushed it with homemade carrot purée. Other weeks? We’re best friends with the baby food aisle and that’s perfectly fine, too.

But if you’re even a little curious about making your own baby food, I promise it’s worth a try.

Now if only the BEABA could fold laundry, too. 😅

Sending love, snacks, and naptime vibes 💗
